Michael Born creates engaging renderings and animations by melding classic rendering artistry with innovative digital tools.
The result is imagery that tells a story, sparks the imagination and captivates an audience.
Michael is an adjunct professor at the Boston Architectural College and teaches Digital Artistic Illustration, a program he designed which teaches students to quickly create convincing renderings of their own designs.
He founded and teaches the SketchUp Bootcamp at the Boston Society of Architects, a monthly program to teach architects and designers how to use SketchUp, a popular design and modeling tool.
Michael also teaches two-day intensive SketchUp classes at the American Graphics Institute.
Trained as an architect with 20 years of experience in the industry, Michael's illustrations and animations breathe life into design, whether from napkin sketches or construction documents. Since launching Born Illustration in 2007, he has explored and perfected techniques to evoke emotional connections that eclipse photorealism. He has worked with artists and filmmakers as well as architects, developers, and fundraisers, and is a member of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators (ASAI).
"One of the many things I find appealing in Michael’s sketches is that they are approachable and loose. Michael's style places the emphasis on the proposed building without a lot of peripheral noise. I wholeheartedly recommend his services."

"Last year I hired Born Illustration to develop images for one of my public art proposals, and it has completely changed my practice."
- Ralph Helmick, Helmick Sculpture
"Michael became a valuable addition to our design team by being able to quickly and easily work with our design concept and push it forward to the next level. He was a good listener, added his own creative insights to the process, and produced a professional graphic presentation that told our story clearly."
- Ellen Light, Architect
"Michael listens well and brings his own constructive comments into the work, the result of which helped to develop the design and effectively communicate the intent to the client. We look forward to using his services again and recommend him without reservation."
